Heathrow Airport dates back to the First World War when it was just one of several airfields used by the British Flying Corps and throughout World War II, it was reserved for use by the Royal Air Force (RAF). The most significant Heathrow expansion. however, was the addition of Terminal 5 which included building a main terminal and three satellite buildings, all on the far west of the airport. It also included parking for Terminal 5, a multi-storey car park, operated by an advanced automated parking system.

Terminal 5 was opened to the public in March 2008, but was absolutely chaotic. Flights had to be cancelled and luggage was lost. It could only resume full service in April 2008.

The construction of a third runway to the north of Heathrow Airport, will raise airport capacity by 350 flights a day. If the problems surrounding the sixth terminal can be overcome the building of the third runway and Sixth Terminal could start as early as 2012.
